LeGarrette Blount to skip Patriots White House trip, says he doesn't feel 'welcome'
John Breech Feb-10-2017 89 0

At the rate we're going, Tom Brady might be the only Patriots player to visit the White House when the team heads to Washington, D.C., later this year to celebrate their victory in Super Bowl LI.

LeGarrette Blount has added himself to the list of players who won't be attending the ceremony. During an interview with Rich Eisen on Thursday, Blount said he won't go to the White House because he doesn't feel "welcome" there.

"I will NOT be going to the White House," Blount said. "I don't feel welcome in that house. I'll leave it at that."

Blount is the fifth Patriots player over the past four days to announce that he won't be visiting the White House. The Patriots running back joins teammates Martellus Bennett, Devin McCourty, Dont'a Hightower and Chris Long on New England's list of players will be skipping out on the chance to meet President Donald Trump.

Long also announced Thursday that he wouldn't be going to the White House. As for Bennett, he made the decision to skip the trip before the Patriots even won the Super Bowl.

On McCourty's end, he echoed Blount's reason, and said that he wasn't going because he wouldn't feel "accepted" there.

Hightower's explanation for skipping the ceremony is that he has already been there. The Patriots linebacker was a member of the 2014 team that visited the White House while Barack Obama was in office.

Super Bowl star James White might also skip the White House trip. The man who scored three touchdowns in the Patriots' 34-28 win over the Falcons said he'll make his decision when the time comes.

Thanks to Bill Belichick, the Patriots are almost always on the same page. However, the White House trip could lead to some tension among teammates. Belichick, Brady and owner Robert Kraft will definitely be at the White House ceremony because they're all good friends with Trump.

If Trump feels insulted by so many players skipping the visit, it wouldn't be shocking if he were to let Kraft and Belichick know. That being said, it might not be a big deal at all. Brady didn't go on the Patriots' last White House trip back in 2014 when Obama was still in office.

Brady is just one of several star athletes who have avoided a White House visit. Larry Bird and Michael Jordan also once skipped out on their White House celebrations.

Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott is one of the most talented players in the NFL, which could make him a potential target for trouble.

He seemed to be bringing the trouble on Friday night and TMZ released a video of Elliott allegedly being detained in the town of his Ohio State Buckeyes.

But Elliott took to social media on Saturday morning to deny TMZ's report.

I was never "detained" by the police. Nor was I ever questioned or in any type of trouble. ?
— Ezekiel Elliott (@EzekielElliott) February 18, 2017
The man in the video clearly looks like Ezekiel Elliott and the police are definitely looking at/for something in a car, but it doesn't go any further than that. It does not appear that he is being detained.

More accounts of the interaction between Elliott and the police will surely emerge, but for now, it appears Elliott's run-in with the police was nothing more than a run of the mill exchange.

Trent Richardson has been out of the NFL for two years and now it looks like it will stay that way.
Richardson was arrested in Hoover, Al. on a third-degree domestic violence charge on Thursday night, Alabama.com reports. A woman was left with scratches and bruises on her face following the incident.

Hoover police responded to a 911 call for a reported domestic disturbance at the Hyatt Place Hotel at 8:04 p.m. A second call came through at 8:05 p.m. about yelling coming from one of the rooms at the hotel.

Hoover police Capt. Gregg Rector told Alabama.com officers arriving on scene came in contact with Richardson and the woman and determined the two were arguing earlier at a Walmart. At some point their argument turned physical, which led to the woman being left with bruises and scratches.
Raiders’ Aldon Smith reportedly involved in domestic incident.

The name of the woman has yet to be released. She was treated for her injuries at the scene.
Richardson is in Hoover City Jail with a bond set at $1,000. He’s expected to be released when he posts the bond.

Richardson was a first-round draft pick in the 2012 NFL Draft by the Browns, who took him with the third overall. The former Alabama running back was a force for the Crimson Tide in college and was part of two National Championship teams.

Trent Richardson is expected to be released from jail after he posts a $1,000 bond after being arrested on a domestic violence charge. (Hoover Police Dept.)

His professional career never really panned out.

After a strong rookie season where he rushed for 950 yards and 11 touchdowns. He’d only play two games for Cleveland in 2013 before being traded to the Colts in 2014.

Richardson never found his footing in two years with the Colts and no team has placed him on their active roster since.

Normally domestic violence charges for NFL athletes are a death sentence. Former Ravens running back Ray Rice was never given a second chance in the league after his incident and Greg Hardy played one year with the Cowboys before teams started to stay away.

From the big game to the big house: Super Bowl champion Michael Floyd has been sentenced to 120 days in jail after striking a plea deal in his extreme DUI case, according to TMZ Sports.

The 27-year-old wide receiver — who was arrested in Scottsdale, Ariz. on Dec. 12 after cops found him passed out at the wheel at a traffic light — reportedly pled guilty to extreme DUI in Scottsdale City Court on Thursday.

Floyd will reportedly serve 24 of those days at a Maricopa County facility and the other 96 under house arrest. He will also serve 30 hours of community service and has to pay a $5,115.99 fine, Fox10 reported.

The Cardinals booted Floyd off their roster after his arrest, during which he reportedly had a blood alcohol level of .21 (more than twice the legal limit).

The Patriots picked him up two days later, and they went on to win Super Bowl LI over the Falcons.
Floyd, who’s currently a free agent, had played his entire five-year NFL career in Arizona before playing for New England. He only played two games for the Patriots and was inactive for the Super Bowl, but he'll still get a ring.

Former NFL quarterback Vince Young has hired agent Leigh Steinberg in an attempt to reboot his football career.

Steinberg announced that he signed Young, 33, in a Twitter post on Wednesday, declaring Young has a "dream of playing more football."

On Thursday, Steinberg tweeted that he was in negotiations with the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the CFL regarding Young.

Young, the former star at Texas, has not played in an NFL regular-season game since 2011. He retired from football in 2014.

The Spring League, an independent four-team football league made up of free agents that debuts in April, has publicly expressed interest in adding Young, the former No. 3 overall pick who earned rookie of the year honors and made the Pro Bowl in 2006 and 2009 during his six years in the NFL.

Young last attempted a comeback in 2014, a brief offseason stint with the Cleveland Browns. He signed following a minicamp tryout but was cut days after the Browns drafted Johnny Manziel. Before that, Young was cut by the Green Bay Packers in the preseason in 2013.

Young works for the University of Texas as a development officer in its division of diversity and community engagement.

He returned to his alma mater, where he led the Longhorns to a national championship in 2005, following his retirement and took a position specifically created for him that pays $100,000 annually.

Young was sentenced to 18 months of probation in January after pleading no contest to a DWI charge. He was fined $300 and ordered to complete 60 hours of community service to resolve his case after a January 2016 arrest in Austin.

Former University of Miami cornerback Leonard Myers has died after battling cancer. He was 38 years old.

Myers played for the Hurricanes from 1997 to 2000, starting for two and a half seasons at Miami.

"The family lost another one way too soon," the team said Friday on its official Twitter page. "Rest easy, Leonard Myers."

Sinorice Moss, a former Hurricanes wide receiver, expressed shock at Myers passing in a tweet sent Friday morning.

"Everyone is fighting a battle you know knowing about," Moss posted. "Take wings & soar, Leonard Myers #22."

Another UM alum, cornerback DeMarcus Van Dyke, also tweeted out his feelings by simply posting "RIP."

He started for the first four games of his senior year before suffering a foot injury.

Myers was drafted by the New England Patriots in the sixth round of the 2001 NFL Draft and went on to have brief stints with the New Orleans Saints, New York Jets and Detroit Lions.

He earned a Super Bowl ring with the Patriots in 2001.

In 2015, Myers coached wide receivers at New Mexico Highlands University, and in January, he served as the cornerbacks coach for the Nationals team at the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl, according to Patriots.com.

Myers, who was from Fort Lauderdale, went to Dillard High School, where he registered 85 tackles, six interceptions and five fumble recoveries during his senior season.

Draymond Green is now getting involved in the debate over the Charles Oakley and James Dolan feud.

On an episode of his “Dray Day” podcast with Uninterrupted, Green sounded off about Dolan’s treatment of Oakley. The outspoken Warriors forward said Dolan had a “slave master mentality” with the situation.

Green had an issue with how Dolan was fine with Oakley’s confrontational personality when it helped the Knicks, but not when he spoke out against organization.

“You doing it for me, it’s all good,” Green said. “You doing it against me...you speaking out against my organization, it’s not good anymore? That’s a slave mentality. A slave master mentality. That’s ridiculous. It was all fine and dandy when he was laying people out, taking fines and all this stuff for your organization. But now all of a sudden when he says something that he feels, it’s a problem.”

Green didn’t stop there.

He also spoke out against Dolan for the statement he put out following the incident suggesting Oakley had addiction problems even though he didn’t have proof.

“That’s not something that you say to the world. That’s not classy at all,” Green said. “It’s not OK for you to go say to the world as a multibillion dollar organization. How can you even pin that on someone? Just throw that out there. That’s grimy. I think that’s wrong.”

Oakley had to be physically removed from Madison Square Garden last week after an altercation broke out near the Knicks bench. Dolan had banned Oakley from the arena following the incident, but the two sides have since seemed to have resolved some of their issues thanks to NBA Commissioner Adam Silver and Michael Jordan.

Dolan has since lifted his ban of Oakley from MSG, but it’s unlikely the Knicks legend will be paying a visit any time soon.

Former Miami Dophins defensive end Quentin Moses died Sunday in a house fire that also killed a woman and her 10-year-old daughter. Moses was 33.

Moses was unconscious when firefighters found him, along with Andria Godard, 31, and her daughter Jasmine after the early morning fire roared through the Monroe, Georgia home. He later died at a nearby hospital.

For the past five years, Moses was serving as the assistant football coach at Reinhardt University. They acknowledged his passing and expressed their condolences on Twitter.

You will forever be remembered for your love for the game of football and your love for young adults. Rest in Peace Coach Moses. We love you pic.twitter.com/C9Wdor82hL

— Reinhardt Football (@R_U_Football) February 12, 2017

The Oakland Raiders chose Moses in the third round of the 2007 NFL draft, but he never played for the team, giving the Dolphins the chance to snatch him up off waivers before the start of that season. During his four seasons with Miami, he had 4.5 sacks and 35 tackles as their defensive end and lineman.

“We were deeply saddened to hear about the tragic news involving Quentin Moses. Our thoughts and sincere condolences go out to his family and friends during this difficult time,” the team said in a statement.

Among those who have paid their respects on social media are Jason Taylor (Moses’ former teammate and soon-to-be Pro Football Hall of Famer) and current University of Georgia coach Kirby Smart.

My heart breaks for former teammate and friend Quentin Moses and his family. Thoughts, prayers and tears! So sad. Life is too short #RIP

Former Syracuse University and Boston Celtics center Fab Melo has died in his native Brazil, military police said Sunday. He was 26.

An emergency call Saturday night brought police and paramedics to Melo's house in Juiz de Fora, in the southeastern state of Minas Gerais, according to a police sergeant who gave his name only as Couto. Couto said that when the police arrived, paramedics said Melo was dead, with no signs of violence.

"We don't know the cause yet. It's so hard right now, so hard to believe," Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim told ESPN .

The 7-foot Melo was a star at Syracuse and was named Big East defensive player of the year as a sophomore. But he also had academic issues that forced him to miss the 2012 NCAA Tournament after being declared ineligible.

"He was a really good kid, and it's not fair that he will be defined by one thing: a 10-page paper," Boeheim told ESPN. "He worked his tail off to become a really good player and was a nice kid."

Melo was a first-round draft pick in 2012 by the Boston Celtics. At the time, Boston's assistant general manager, Ryan McDonough, marveled at how quickly Melo was picking up the game after just a few years of playing it. McDonough said Melo grew up playing soccer in Brazil, where that sport is national obsession.

But Melo played only six games for the Celtics, spending most of the season with Maine in the NBA Development League.

"I'm so saddened to hear of the passing of Fab Melo," Celtics general manager Danny Ainge wrote on Twitter . "He was a good kid with a big heart. Our prayers go out to all of his loved ones."

In August 2013, Melo was traded to the Memphis Grizzlies, who waived him two weeks later. He then signed with the Dallas Mavericks but was waived shortly after.

Former Dallas Cowboys running back Joseph Randle has been charged with assaulting a fellow inmate in a Kansas jail.

The Wichita Eagle reports that the aggravated battery and disorderly conduct charges filed Wednesday stem from a confrontation Friday in the Sedgwick County Jail. He now has five criminal cases pending against him in the county, where he has been jailed since June.

County prosecutors also allege that he purposely hit people with a car after being asked to leave a housewarming party; dodged law enforcement attempts to serve him with a warrant; threatened to kill a jail deputy; and damaged a jail television.

During a court appearance on the latest charge, Randle said he defended himself when another inmate punched him in the face. His bonds now total $59,000.
